About a year ago, Bob and I were tossing around names for this project. We knew the resulting mixture of Ron and myself would include many of the elements that make up our musical and personal experiences, our influences African-American (soul, funk, jazz, R&B, etc.), Afro-indigenous Caribbean musics ( son montuno, mambo, llaneras, samba, etc.). It was not so hard to imagine Africa connecting all of the Americas through the language of sound. Batidos, which in Latin-American cultures is our version of a milkshake, is the name we agreed upon. We have many different names for them like morir soñando (dying in a dream). They are usually made with native fruit; mamey, guanabana...etc. We wanted to create a place were many different cultures spiritually and musically would blend. Growing up in New York City made the concept a natural. Batidos, this is our mix, the essence of our soul sonic experience oscillating and pulsating. This is not only about a Latin American or Afro-American sound experience, but about a human experience. We hope we have captured a glimpse of the urban grooves blasting out of cars, the sweat of bodies dancing to Eddie Palmieri, the flow and swing of Miles, Adderley and 'Trane, the Colombian songs of my childhood and the expression of the musicians that graced this music and this recording. We have tried to bring you our experiences via the flavorful language of sound. May it make you smile and set off those sympathetic vibrations down in the hip area.
